Family Stargazing Adventure at High Force Waterfall
Family Stargazing Adventure at High Force
A magical half-term evening designed especially for young explorers aged 5–15.
Join us at High Force for a professionally hosted, family-friendly night sky experience combining supper, storytelling and a guided adventure beneath some of England’s darkest skies.
What the Evening Includes
6:00pm – Family Supper
The adventure begins indoors at High Force Hotel with a relaxed, child-friendly supper — the perfect chance to warm up, settle in and build excitement before heading out into the night.
6:45pm – Introduction to the Night Sky
After supper, our professionally trained astronomer will deliver a short, engaging introduction to the night sky, tailored specifically for younger audiences.
Through simple explanations and interactive discussion, children will discover:
-
What stars actually are
-
How the Moon changes shape
-
Why it gets dark at night
-
What we might see above High Force
-
A chance to hold and feel real meteorites, comet fragments and even a piece of the Moon
This isn’t a technical lecture, it’s an accessible and inspiring introduction designed to spark curiosity and imagination.
7:15pm – Torchlit Walk to the Waterfall
As darkness settles over Teesdale, families will head down to the illuminated High Force Waterfall.
The walk itself becomes part of the adventure.
Accompanied by our astronomer and our friendly, knowledgeable Welcome Hosts, the group will explore the night landscape together — blending science with storytelling in a way that feels immersive and exciting.
7:30pm – Night Sky Exploration
At the waterfall, children will:
-
Spot constellations
-
Look for bright planets
-
Use astronomy binoculars
-
Learn how to find key star patterns
-
And the real wow factor is when we light up the magnifisant High Force Waterfall
Alongside this, our Welcome Hosts will weave in the stories of High Force — its geology, history and remarkable power — ensuring there is something to capture every imagination.
The combination of professional astronomy guidance and atmospheric storytelling creates a balanced experience that is educational, engaging and memorable.
