Voices Of The Past: Women of Raby

After the success of last year's event, we will again be hosting our Women of Raby: An Afternoon of Readings for International Women's Day. Join us by the fire for a very special evening where original letters, documents and poems will shed light on some key female figures in Raby's history and their personalities, experiences and beliefs. Our readings will include excerpts from the Handbook for Raby Castle (1870), written by the 4th Duchess of Cleveland (which remains the most comprehensive written history of the castle), letters home written by Sally Coles Stevenson, wife of the American Ambassador, visiting in 1838, and the travel writings of John Byng in 1792 whose encounter with Raby’s Housekeeper thankfully did not appear on TripAdvisor!  This varied and entertaining evening presents the history of the castle through the words left to us by the people who were there.
